| One of this weeks movies stars, a goose from a local Rochester, MN park. |
August 11, November 10
No doubt Rochester, Minnesota’s main claim to fame is the world renowned Mayo-clinic. But did you know it’s also home to an amazing waterfowl spectacle when each fall and winter 35 to 40,000 Canada geese infest the city limits and outlying areas?
The whole town of Rochester is literally a designated state game refuge and the main gathering point for incoming honkers is right here at Silver Lake Park—a several hundred acre, man-made water park, interestingly enough that was built by the Mayo brothers back in the 1930’s.
Naturally, during hunting season, goose hunting is unlawful within the Rochester city limits. But let me tell ya…once these B52’s fly over refuge lines en route to neighboring agricultural feeding fields…they cease being “pets” and absolutely become fair game.
Premier Flight Guide Service owner and professional goose guide Dean Tlougan and I get further acquainted while scouting and discussing the particulars of this world class Canada goose hunt.
Now jumping ahead just prior to our first morning hunt, I’ll tell you my biggest reason for taking dean up on his offer to come down to Rochester and hunt. For some unknown reason, my daughter Karlee has really taken an interest in learning how to call geese and this trip is the best way I know of to fuel that fire
All she wants is to tag along on this hunt…learn everything she possibly can about how goose hunting
works…join in the calling when geese appear…and generally have the opportunity to make the experience her own.
So this week on Outdoor Secrets, hopefully some of those bombers will be making their final approach into our decoys—wings set…feet dangling…and smack down on top of our laps! I know one little girl and a group of hardcore goose hunter’s who’ll be honking their heads off hoping to make it happen and I sure hope you’ll join us for all the close-range excitement.
