| A nice 8 point "border country" buck from the fall of 2006. |
August 4, November 3
Sorry to locals wishing to keep them a secret. I know you’d prefer word not get out about your gigantic whitetail bucks.
“Then Winkelman said it, “ they’ll say over coffee at cafes all across Northwestern Ontario!
“He didn’t only say the biggest whitetails of all are found at the northern-most tip of their range…he told the whole world one of the best places to hunt them is right here in the rainy river district!”
“He showed video…pictures…a map…and everything eh!”
Truly… I am sorry.
I do have a pretty big mouth on trophy whitetail hotspots. Hey, it’s my job and yes,…we have been focusing on the bruit bucks of your region a fair amount in recent years.
But I wouldn’t worry too much about nonresidents over-running your prime Canadian bush country though, because visiting hunters can only hunt with certified guides or an Ontario outfitter.
Ha-ha…Besides, I generally do mention where I’m hunting on my shows and I know you wouldn’t want me to lie.
On an earlier episode this year, I featured an outfitter inviting hunters to experience the Lake of the Woods region of Northwestern Onatrio, where truly magnificent racks are taken each and every fall.
And over the last 5 or 6 years I’ve made no secret about our bow and rifle hunting success at Border Country Outfitters, near Emo, Ontario.
White-tailed deer and black bear too. Only a couple shows back, you saw Joel Maxfield’s bow hunt conclude with a pretty happy ending.
Last fall, we visited Border Country Outfitters again for bucks with a group of bow hunters and that’s what I’ll be sharing with you all today.
On hand were myself…”Outdoor Secrets” archery advisor, Mike Weinkauf…and nationally recognized bow hunter and trophy taker Mike Wheeler.
This guy’s got more humungas bucks to his credit than probably anyone I can name. He also runs his own outfitting operation down in Kansas and is on various pro-staffs for many of today’s top archery companies.
In fact, one he and I both have a lot of good things to say about is Rage Broadheads.
Anyway…a scouting we will go.
Like I said, in such large, wooded county like the Canadian bush, finding ways to lead deer to specific hunting locations is key.
Large feeding plots and smaller hunting food plots make all the difference. So does baiting for whitetail, which I should add, is completely legal in Ontario.
After a short break, we’ll see how many of us score big with their bows in Ontario. So for the rest of our fall 2006 Border Country Bucks archery story, be sure to stay with us.
