Pro Staffer Joel Maxfield and his trophy
"riverbottom" buck. |
(Airs the weeks of
July 9- July 15 and October 8-to October 14)
Welcome
everyone…and
before getting right into today’s hunts,
first let’s briefly
touch on a few of the who’s, where’s
what’s and why’s.
We’ll be
partnering up with Joe Smith of River’s
Bend Outfitters and his 20+ years of experience
tracking trophy whitetails in southeast Illinois.
Guest hunters include noted Mathews Bows
pro Joel Maxfeld and Jim Bedell of my
prostaff—each
of which have a case of whitetail fever like
I can’t even tell ya.
When it comes
to “what” our boys
are hoping for, I’ll just bet you
can guess—simply
an opportunity to draw on one of those
truly massive riverbottom bucks this area
is so
well known for. As for “when,” try
unseasonably warm conditions and that ever-difficult “pre” pre-rut
period.
Within the thick, secure riverbottom
environment, the boys are expecting a tough
hunt and
very little to help them pattern big buck
movements.
Making things even worse, the
weatherman’s
forecast for rain painfully comes true
and not a single swampbuck shows come the first
morning.
So, I guess all that’s
really left to know is “how”, under
the circumstances, today’s guest hunters
and outfitter are planning on getting the job
done and “why.” true…any
day is a good day to go bow hunting. Some just
require more patience and where-withall to eek
out the desired result.
So this weeks “Outdoor
Secrets” above
even scent elimination, strategic stand location
or anything else… speaking a language
monster bucks understand becomes the deciding
factor
on this Illinois trophy whitetail
bow hunt.
