| Jack
Link with his first white sturgeon from the
Hells Canyon area of Idaho. |
It all begins at the
airport near my Brainerd, Minnesota home,
where I’m met by a good
friend and business associate from Minong,
Wisconsin.
How’s this for going
fishing in style, a private jet journey
to our destination?
Let’s
just say the food snack business has been
as
good
to Jack Link as Jack Link’s
beef jerky tastes to anyone who’s ever
popped a piece into their mouth!
As hard a working
man as he’s always been, founding and
managing the family business…Jack is
also a man who plays just as hard on the
hunting and fishing trips he loves.
Whenever
the two
of us get together, swapping epics
of recent
adventures is always one of the first orders of business.
Yes, Idaho is
today’s destination. Any guesses yet
as to what the two of us are up to?
Does the time I was ruthlessly
convinced to climb into a float tube to
fight
and land a 300-pound sturgeon ring any bells?!!
Ya know, I’ve
never truly forgiven guide Jim Spickelmeier for that whole fiasco,
but since it did turn out to be my most memorable show of all time…I
probably shouldn’t start out by calling him names. Besides,
in all honesty, he probably is the most animated character in fishing
that I’ve ever had
the privilege to meet.
Killgore Adventures, in Whitebird,
Idaho, is a family-run adventure outfit, which
offers jet boat tours and
a host
of guided fishing adventures
on the Snake and Salmon Rivers. Over the next few days, owner Curt
Killgore and Jim Spickelmeir will be our guides.
Want a real
kick? While breathing in some of the most spectacular
mountain
scenery known to man, try being whisked away down a raging river
in a 28’ jet
boat with powerful twin engines! The ride alone is well worth
the price of admittance for thrill seekers, but as you can guess,
Jack
and I
are pumped for much, much
more. We’ve traveled to Idaho for one thing and one thing
alone—the
sheer excitement of long, unrelenting battles with the largest
fish that swims in North American freshwater. One, in fact, which
can
weigh over 1,500 pounds…reach
a length of up to 20 feet…live to be over 100 years…and
a fish well-known for taking anglers and the heaviest equipment
to the absolute breaking
point, the mighty white sturgeon.
