Someone asked me the other day…. Babe – if your goal was to seek out walleye’s - - LOT’S of walleyes - - the kind that fight like a freight train… while also having a heck of a crack at a once-in-a-lifetime “teener”… where would you go? My answer was fast and simple. Budd’s Gunisao Lake Lodge.
I also had the same thoughts last summer for a place to take a lucky angler and his guest. And by lucky, I mean REAL lucky. Steve Johnson of Milwaukee Wisconsin was one of literally thousands of people who entered our Chevy Trucks Dream Trips fishing sweepstakes last year. His name was pulled from the pile last spring and my staff and the good folks at gunisao lake lodge made all the arrangements. I finally met up with Steve and his father-in-law Ron Wehr in Winnipeg before we hopped on a flight bound for Gunisao.
During a short, comfortable one hour and ten minute flight, ya can’t help but take in the vast beauty Canada has to offer. All you see is lake after lake after lake that are just waiting to be fished. Finally, there nestled among the pines and insulated by wilderness, Gunisao Lake awaits where we’re welcomed by a warm handshake.
It’s time to head out onto famous Gunisao lake. And by famous – I mean walleyes! And by walleyes – I mean LOT’S of walleyes! Sweepstakes winners Steve Johnson and his father-in-law Ron Wehr look pretty excited so what do ya say we put em onto some fish?
I’m gonna let you in on a little secret. I’ve been to this place dozens of times and I know what’s ahead. Steve and Ron have no idea how good these waters are but I have a feeling they’ll find out.
