You can fish and
hunt wolf, wolverine, and small game
(Ptarmigan after Sept 1) at no extra
charge.You must purchase the appropriate
licenses. Success on Wolf and Wolverine
during these fall hunts is marginal
but the fishing and Ptarmigan hunting
can be very exciting. Lake trout
range in size up to 50 lbs. plus,
and grayling up to 20 inches.
The season for
sport hunts starts August 15 and
ends November 30. During the August
hunts the caribou are in velvet and
by the beginning of September the
velvet begins to shed. By the beginning
of October, the lakes in the barren
lands begin to freeze, bringing the
fall hunts to an end. Success rates
throughout August and September remain
about the same at 99%.
The fall of
2001, three of my friends went
to this lodge with one of my camera
crews and they came home with 5
big caribou bulls. Four of these
bulls made the Pope & Young
book and one was a Boone & Crocket.
While they were at this lodge another
hunter brought in a new world record
Barren Ground Bull.
